For the large scale outdoor installation, Line, that I am doing for an arts festival next month, I am creating 4 rows of "laundry." Originally each piece of laundry was going to be appliqued with words on it. But realistically that is like a 6 month, not 1 month, project and I am not sure conceptually necessary.
So as an experiment I tried a cut-out of the words, partially because it will be much faster and less painstaking to make- but I also I kind of love the idea of seeing the other words, the blue sky, and the green grass through the cut out words.
What do you think?
I am diving into this project head first this afternoon as my sampler will be done in about one hours time. YAY!
wonderful idea! and hopefully it'll be a bit windy too the day you hang it- the panels billowing out around the text.
ReplyDeletemy mind is taken in all sorts of directions by a project like this. cutting is a highly charged and historically loaded action. i love it. :)
Yes I agree with the above comment - I like the symbolism of cutting which could also work brilliantly with particular words... and it opposes the precious quality of the previous work you've been doing which is a nice dynamic, too. great stuff as ever xx
ReplyDeletegives an especially ephemeral quality to the words and will be a nice contrast to the applique, which will seem more solid and heavy in comparison. beautiful.
ReplyDeletethank you so much for all the input. I did a few more in the studio and am so excited.
ReplyDeleteAnd your comments gave me a lot to think about in respect to how cutting the words changes the concept a bit. And how do I re-find the language to talk about this technique. Very exciting.
And yes I am looking forward to the contrast of the applique and embroidery with the cut out.
Thanks!!!!
I love the cutting! I can't wait to see how it works on the line. I think seeing things through the pieces will be very intriguing. And yes, cutting brings on a whole new bucket of things to potentially talk about. I'm really excited to see how this turns out!
ReplyDeletei can't wait to see it either and my fingers are so croseed in hoping that it all works out fine and looks good...I feel a little in over my head. We'll see:)
