studio day.

I woke up today with a baby giggling to himself in his bed, sun streaming in, and an hour later then normal. Today is going to be a good day!

Off to the studio to work on the outspread arms piece and try to fix another piece that I almost destroyed this weekend. More on that later.

Parlor style Antics.

Sunday afternoon was a very wonderful art event that I was part of called Parlor Antics. Artist Julie Kirkpatrick and her husband invite 5 artists to install work into their amazing historical Crown Heights town home.


They ask that the artists respond to the fact that the work is being hung in a home and respond to it as a place or its architecture.

I chose to hang a new work of mine in the front window of the parlor...love the back light with the work.

and install "waking with you" on a couch in the room.

I was so delighted to see my work in this environment and feel like it looks SO much better in a place that has history and is surrounded by the energy of life instead of a sterile white box... and I so wish I had the opportunity to see my work this way more often.

The event was wonderful, the people were so kind, sweet, and fun.

and so nice to have my art in a real home... I usually do not get to see it once it makes it there.

studio visit.

Today I am going to go over to the studio of artist Julie Tesser to do a little studio visit. It has been a long time planning and I am looking forward to seeing what she is currently working on.


Julie tends to work a lot within more decorative motifs and often combines clay with fiber in an interesting way.


Julie has a strong interest in architecture and the motifs and decorative aspects. She states:

Ornate architectural forms and structures are a prime inspiration, as are the decorative elements that embellish them, such as plants and flowers. In addition, both plants and gardens contain their own organic compositions, and at times I’ve created an entire environment from a single plant or blossom’s structure. Interior design elements such as patterned wallpaper, rugs and fabrics are other important sources.

I would love to see her work really pushed in the direction of scale and repetition.

quiet brain, tired mind, still hands.

The opening, fundraiser, and celebration last night was much fun and plenty of dancing too.
The show is up into mid to late April so stop by to see the work. It is close by to this show so you can do them both!

Another artist that t's book shelf invasion reminded me of is the great and fascinating Vik Muniz. I first began to look at Muniz's work early on in my undergraduate career and have always been totally compelled by his innovative use of materials and how he goes to such great lengths and commits so much time to creating the piece and then photographs it, destroys it, and starts again. Leaving the photograph as the remaining work.


As I was looking through a catalogue of his I got reminded of his thread drawings where he just piles thread on a surface to recreate famous landscape paintings. The textural quality is incredible and with my current work moving more and more towards a textural dimensionality I was inspired.

Muniz works with so many varied materials to "re-create" famous art images. Sometimes it is iconic works of art or...

But generally conceptually delving into ideas of what is art, what is the value of art, what can we trust in media and imagery, etc...

I love how his wire drawings seem so much like thread in the style of drawing.

Muniz's most recent series are images created from garbage and where extremely huge installations- check out the size of the chairs in the above image to get scale... But the work has so much back story that it is impressive. Read about these works here.


I saw these large scale photos in person and they are so incredible the overall image is great and then when you start to see what the image is created from, such as a bureau of drawers or a pile of discarded iron work...it sucks you in on a trip of discovery.

a peek at what is happening to the piece... I have to hang it Sunday for a private art event so am working hard to get it to a place that I am happy with and then have some more time before the image needs done for the catalogue. I am feeling better and better about it...
