paint, draw, stitch

I have heard the name Alice Kettle many times, but for some reason either never looked her up or when I did the work did not resonate with me. But now that I am mostly looking at the stitch, in my own practice, as a form of drawing I am attracted to many of her works..

Obviously trained as a painter Alice slowly builds up many layers of colors and lines with a free machine sewing technique. Influences of Picasso, Klimt and maybe Schiele are obvious and her understanding of painting and its history is too.

Her work is often of VERY large scale and quite impressive on that level. It also must weigh a ton. I wonder how she hangs them?

I feel that most likely her work is a must see in person experience as they look very much like paintings from afar but have incredible textures and dimensionality up close.

Her website is infuriatingly slow but here is a link.
And to an interview here.

I had the honor of taking a workshop from Alice at the...2009 Surface Design Conference. She is a lovely person and her work simply amazes. Nice to see her featured here.

Yes, I hope to see it in person someday.
