missing home.

As I took off my boots to teach yoga last night I looked up and on the gallery wall was a lovely simple drawing with stitched texture. I was surprised and pleasantly pleased by the simplicity and directness of the work. I thought the name of the artist Jung Eun Park sounded familiar and apparently I did a brief mention of her almost a year ago. But since then her website has been updated and her work has grown so I thought it would be ok to discuss her work again.


Jung mostly works on paper and often is combining elements of pencil drawing, watercolor, and simple stitching to make simple but compelling illustrations. Her stitches are exclusively done in red thread.

She defines 2 words in her statement:

missing:

1. lacking, absent, or not found
2. to disappear, become lost

home:
1. a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family or household.
2. the place in which one's domestic affections are centered.
3. a person's native place or own country.
4. the dwelling place or retreat of an animal.
5. the place or region where something is native or most common.
6. (in games) the destination or goal.

and those definitions seem to be all she needs to say. We understand by their juxtaposition all the concept and motivation for her work.


Reminding us that sometimes home is not just a place but a person.
