bittersweet.

I am so delighted to share that this piece, gaze, has been sold. It is always such a wonderful validation as an artist to have a collector decide to bring your work into their home or work place. And I am beyond flattered because this particular piece was sold to Etsy itself to be hung in their Brooklyn offices. So to me this is a great opportunity for the work to continuously be seen and knowing that they have such a huge selection of wonderful work to choose from I have a wonderful sense of pride.

However as joyful as I am to be selling such a special piece I am also sad. For obvious reasons this work has sentimental emotions attached to it and for that my heart breaks a little to see it go. To make matters more difficult I have yet to finish a new work since this work was finished. I have 3 well on their way and 1 other started but due to varying circumstances nothing has been finished... and for me the most recently finished piece always had a little special place in my heart. So...
I need to get my ass in gear a finish a piece.

I need to take my camera to the studio and take tons of pictures of gaze so that I can remember it well.

and then lovingly package it to be sent to its new home. Where I hope it will be loved.

beautiful creatures.

Through a comment on my blog I was led to the work of Finch and as his website says " He makes things."

And indeed he does, make lovely, wonderful, whimsical things.

Most of his objects are a mix between toy, sculpture, adorable, and a little creepy. The balance is perfect making you the viewer have a complicated but wonderful response towards the work.

I definitely prefer his animals over his other work though they all have a nice sensibility. His background is in editorial accessory and prop making and to me this is evident in his avant gard stuffed animals?

The whimsy is wonderful. As he states " he strives to make everything as beautifully as possible." and to me he is a success.

I would love to see an entire forest full installation of his creations.

See more here.

much neeeded.

The day in the studio was much needed yesterday and due to a long T nap I got a lot done. So wonderful it was being there that after his music class this morning I am heading back over for the afternoon.
Still working away on the "kimono" piece and pretty happy with how it is coming out and looking forward to getting it done to get back to some other pieces that are pulling at my heart.
If only I had 3 of me.

fingers crossed

Heading over to the studio to keep plugging away at this, it is coming along well but I have so much still to do in order to finish it the way I want by the deadline for the catalogue.
So we are running out, a little late due to an appt.

Fingers crossed the day will be productive.

sorry the image looks low quality not sure what that is all about.

wishing you...

on Valentines Day.

collective thread...

some works in process of Rebecca's from her blog.

Last night was the most recent meeting of our fiber collective, Collective Thread, and it was a great meeting. We were invited into the studio of the ever fabulous Rebecca Ringquist to look at her work in process. She is preparing for a solo show in the spring and her new work is very much about her journey from Chicago to NYC. The work is sumptuous as it always is but there are some very exciting new things happening too. Those of you lucky enough to be in Chicago will have to make sure to check her show out when it opens.

We also looked at the work of Linsey Wallace, a new face to the group and me. Her work explores issues of medicine and spirituality and she is wanting it to begin to talk about the conflict between western medicine and more spiritually based ancestral medicines. It led to a very interesting discussion.

a finished work of Rebecca's

It was interesting as Rebecca is very sure of and grounded in her work and process and is more interested in just continuing to see it grow. While Linsey seems more on the precipice of finding out what her work will be. Though she has exhibited quite extensively and is established as an artist by talking to her it seemed that she was working towards some clarity in her direction. In general it made for a great meeting between the two of them and I am so happy they shared their work with us.

Next time will hopefully be just as great.

some stiching in Chelsea...

So I had a little bit of a whirlwind of art this weekend even with my terrible cold and tired body.
I headed to Chelsea on Friday afternoon to attend an alumni cocktail party. Since I was heading there I popped in quickly on a few shows I had been wanting to see. 2 birds with one stone.

One such exhibit was the Gagosian exhibit by Francesco Vezzoli which I had mentioned a while back. I am glad I got to see it though I am unsure as to what I think. The installation was quite gorgeous evoking the feeling, stillness, and profound quiet that a a church sanctuary does which is perfectly fitting for his work. But the work itself was a little flat for me. He embroidered his signature tears onto fabric that had the images of supermodels as saints printed on it. The work was quite lovely in one way but in another way much to familiar. His statement of celebrity and beauty worship is clear but as far as where he stands on the issue, not clear at all. Totally worth seeing as the drama on the installation is quite successful but yet I was not in the end very moved.

I then thought I had missed the chance to see Cayce Zavaglia's newest work at the new Lyons Weir location as the group show that she was included in had come down but as I walked by it beckoned to me from the window. Her piece is still hanging behind the desk along with another one in the back gallery. As always her work awes me with her skill and loving approach to the portrait.

But the highlight for me was the exhibit girls, girls, girls at Jenkins Johnson gallery. I generally am a fan of the gallery and have enjoyed quite a few exhibits that they have had. I knew about this show because artist Maggy Hiltner's work was included. And it was SO wonderful to walk off the elevator and have Maggy's piece right there to greet me, it did not disappoint what so ever, but the show in general was quite fabulous. Very diverse in medium and style but a very well curated exhibit of all things girly.

I then did a quick pop into one of my favorite galleries George Adams Gallery and saw the solo exhibit of painter Amer Kobaslija . The paintings are quite beautiful studies of the painters studio.

And of course afterwards enjoyed an evening of catching up with some old friends and professors. It was perfect. Beside the TERRIBLE cold.

to sail away from all of this...

Yesterday on Abigail Doan's blog she featured the work of Elis Vermeulen and it took me away.
I generally try to wait some time or avoid re-posting about an artist but here work moves me so that I just could not wait.

so here is my little journey...

I want to wrap myself in...

and sail away from all of this...

so that I can lay down to rest ...

underneath...

and be in bliss.

She says essentially nothing about her work on her site and I, in a very rare moment, prefer that. I think it would be hard to find words as poetic as her work.

wishing...

I wish I was getting back to these works. But alas, I am not.
I HAVE to get the Kimono work done and that totally has awhile to go.
And today I am heading to Chelsea to see 2 shows and then an Alumni event so no stitching done.

This week has been a frustrating one to say the least.
I hope next weekend brings a healthier mama and baby and a more productive time.

But atleast the sun is a shining!

evidence.

So lovely is the work of Angela Hennessey.

But since my cold leaves me short for words you can simply see the lovely. Her work is often heavy in meaning so please take the time to stop by her website and learn more.

Her statement is gorgeously written and powerful. Anything that ends with the words:

Negotiating loss. I make my own evidence.

is poetry. Read it here.
