I ended up spending a few hours in the studio yesterday and it was pure pleasure. We headed over to pick something up and t seemed happy as a clam so we stayed. I worked. He played.
I felt myself. It was good.

Julie Peppito is not a fiber artist but she often employs fiber and stitching in her gorgeous and playful sculptures.



Her works seems to be in the realm a child's imagination of a fantasy world of color, nature, and hybrid life. In some ways it reminds me of Kimberley Harts awesome work.



Julie states this:

Nature, consumerism and the ways they connect are primary themes in my work. I transform trinkets, trash, and the residue of Americana into paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations. By bundling, layering and stitching together the waste around me, I confront the mass of consumer goods that tugs at my wallet and overflows the Earth.

By decorating the debris with carefully illustrated narratives and embroidered textures I redirect its message and attempt to eclipse its damage. I want to make the awful and corrupt delicious again.

Not to mention that her drawings are uber gorgeous and "delicious" too. I love how the work seems somehow simple and light but also is covered in stuff or full of stuff. A wonderful balance.

I love these 2 works hung next to another. Perfect decision by the gallerists.


My mother in law and niece went -so more pictures from them soon. A good friend of mine from grad school went to the opening and then left me a message saying that she " felt surrounded by me and my passion." So that was a good review.

gloves, anyone?

I love these hand painted vintage gloves by artist Ellen Greene. Though they are not made to be worn, they would be the perfect accessory if you were heading down to Coney Island.



I have always loved old gloves and bought them regularly though I never wear them...and
her nod to old style tattoos is awesome and her placement on the gloves perfect.


I cannot help but want all of these to be embroidered but alas we cannot always have what we want. Ellen has a plethora of this work so you should go and check them all out.


She states this about the series:

No one else shopping at thrift stores digs into those overflowing bins of stockings, hankies, coin purses and gloves. These small, personal, feminine accessories speak of a time past when fashion upheld strict rules and certain items were mandatory in a wardrobe. When viewed in today’s “casual age,” the accessories seem almost exotic- with the glove being the most exotic of all.

I bought my first pair of gloves purely out of sensual longing. The leather was so buttery and smooth, a slight beige color with only a faint indication that they had been worn- just a bit of discoloration in the fingers. My imagination ran wild with all the people and things these gloves must have touched. These gloves I knew were worn for special formal occasions, like weddings, funerals, and dances. Certainly these gloves were present at rituals tapping the strongest human emotions.

I didn’t paint on the gloves immediately; they hung around my studio as odd objects often do. It was much later that I was overcome with an urge- not a thought or concept- but an urge to paint on the gloves. I was immediately shocked and pleased by the way the image changed the gloves from a recognizably wearable item to something else. They transcendend their objectivity, they spoke about the emotion that I felt was inside them when I first held the gloves.

So lots of yay's as I have been working all week on finally getting my website updated in time for my show's opening tomorrow. (Also one of the reasons that I have been practically m.i.a this week.) It has not been updated since before T was born. This is also known as almost 2 years ago.


Finally, I have my newest fiber works up. Please go check it out see some new stuff and tell me what you think. I plan on adding some installation shots and work in process shots but it is good enough for today.

This Friday, August 12th, from 6-9pm, Brooklyn artist, Joetta Maue will be debuting her new collection of embroideries and installation pieces entitled, You Are Home To Me.

According to Chinese myth, the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of those who are destined to be soul mates. The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place or circumstances. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.

Inspired by this myth, Joetta Maue creates drawings of her "soul mate" and family in red thread: exemplifying her lover and child as her home, bound to her heart in an unbreakable way. "home within home."

I cannot wait, cannot wait to see the Do Ho Suh exhibit which opens next month at Lehman Maupin. I have long found his work fascinating...


His exploration of the home is both honest and distant at the same time. Which works perfectly for his concepts of displacement and identity.

The press release states:

In Home Within Home, Do Ho Suh will present a series of works that reflect the artist’s ongoing exploration of themes surrounding cultural displacement and the co-existence of cultural identities, as well as the perception of our surroundings and how one constructs a memory of a space. Suh’s own feeling of displacement when he arrived in the U.S. in 1991 to study at RISD led him to measure spaces in order to establish relationships with his new surroundings...

I wish I had seen these 2 works in person. I swoon at those steps.

gorgeous luminescence.

Gorgeous weavings by Polish artist, Wlodzimierz Cygan.


His work is quite large scale and I am sure cannot be fully experienced from these images.



Cygan explores the warp and how he can push its boundaries and work more freely.


Often weaves in luminescent points throughout the work.


They are lovely, gorgeous, and speak of other worlds to me. See much more of his work and some scrumptious detail shots here.
